We recently had the pleasure of visiting a group of bright and curious AP Environmental Science students at Bonny Eagle High School, all eager to learn about renewable energy and its impact on our community. Throughout our presentation, they raised insightful questions that we were inspired to share. Here are a few of the highlights from our conversation:

Solar farms are owned and operated by various entities, including utility companies, independent developers, and community cooperatives. They’re often situated on land that may not be suitable for other purposes, like old landfills or gravel pits. - How do solar farms work?
Solar farms utilize photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. This electricity is then integrated into the local grid for distribution. Maine boasts 60 solar farms – and counting! - How much energy is produced by each solar farm?
The amount of energy generated by a solar farm varies based on factors like panel efficiency and sunlight intensity. On average, a solar farm can power thousands of homes at once. - What are the benefits of community solar in Maine?
Solar farms offer numerous benefits, including renewable energy generation, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, cost savings for consumers, and local economic development. - Why should the community get involved?
Community solar farms are powered by the local community. Neighbors and small businesses can join together to support renewable energy and ensure more solar energy is added to the utility grid. Community solar farms also generate local jobs for our neighbors and are an integral part in creating a brighter future for generations to come. - How does enrolling in community solar impact utility bills?Customers that join a local solar farm are guaranteed to save money and will save up to 15% on the electricity costs. This is because solar farms receive subsidies and they do not need to purchase fuel (natural gas or coal) to produce electricity.
