Going Solar in 3 steps

A developer builds a community solar project in your area. They seek out customers like you who want clean energy.

Electricity produced by the community solar farm is delivered to the grid. You earn renewable energy credits for this electricity.

Your energy credits are deducted from your monthly utility bill. This is the bill you get from your regular electricity provider—in Maine, that’s usually CMP or Versant.

You’ll still be a customer of your electric utility. They’ll continue to deliver your power.

The solar developer will bill you separately for your renewable energy credits.

In Maine, these credits are 10% to 15% cheaper than the standard electricity rate—that’s how you save. The more people who join community solar, the more accessible it becomes, giving everyone a chance to save while strengthening the community. That’s how Community Solar works for you and Maine.

Understand your usage

During enrollment, the developer will look at your average energy usage over the past 12 months. This enables them to allocate enough kilowatts to offset up to 100% of your monthly electric bill.

Maine Community Solar thrives because of consumers like you. When you subscribe, you directly support local solar projects, making renewable energy more accessible and sustainable for your community. Your participation helps strengthen Maine’s energy independence and creates good-paying jobs in your community. Plus, you can enjoy potential savings on your electric bill—all without installing panels or changing your utility provider. Together, we’re building a cleaner, more resilient future for Maine.
